Tyler, Luca's best pal, stayed with us overnight last night. It was the first time they'd seen one another since he and his Mum moved to Aberdeen at Christmas. Luca has been so excited this week, his sense of anticipation growing daily. Yesterday morning, an hour before Tyler was due to arrive, the young shaggy head quietly approached me in the kitchen, took my hand and whispered "I just like him so much, y'know".
The timing stunk though. I'd arranged to meet a couple of old footballing buddies in town for a few afternoon shandies, while Carole was going to a gig with one of her friends in the evening (her friends son is in a band - youth is long behind us....) so time was tight.
Allied to this, of course, is the flu-ey bug hanging around. Carole sounded like a grizzly bear all week, which predictably has eventually caught up with Luca and I. The 6 year old is certainly suffering the most however. I became very popular with the boys last night when insisting they sleep in separate bedrooms. However, the necessity of that decision was demonstrated only ten minutes after they'd gone to bed as the perma-coughing Luca began throwing up bile in bed. I spent most of the next few hours with him, watching him evacuate some gloriously coloured substances from his stomach.
He's still rasping and raking this morning, but at least his temperatures down a little. However, the plan for Tyler's dad to take both to the swimming pool today will obviously, but sadly, have to be postponed for another week.
I'm struggling rather though. The necessity of my early arrival home from the pub yesterday now seems a blessing in disguise, as a hangover allied to this bug would be a real Sunday treat. Rather idiotically however (well, this is me) I'll still be accompanying a friend to Nairn later this morning for another 10K race (see race link http://www.nairnroadrunners.co.uk/4964/index.html). I'm current analysing the course to see which section would be most comfortable to curl up at the side of the road and go for a shivery, sniffly nap.
**Useless fact of the day - The flu has been around a long time, with Hippocrates having written of a similarly described affliction**
